  • For road trips, always check the oil, brake, and transmission fluids. Always use clean oil to prevent trouble with car engines.

Basic Principles of Car Engines

Although there are different automobile models, all car engines share common designs and concepts. Consequently, all car engines also have components that are common in them. Basically, car engines are combustion machines. Their main function is to burn fuel, thereby converting the chemical energy of the fuel into heat and mechanical output.

This means that fuel-driven car engines operate by converting the heat energy from the combustion of fuel into useful mechanical energy, namely, powering the car to move. The basic principles that govern all fuel-driven car engines are the same.

Based on the type of fuel used, car engines can be classified into two categories, namely, diesel engines and gasoline engines. The main operational difference between these two car engines is in the way they burn fuel. A diesel engine burns fuel by premixing the fuel with oxygen and subjecting the mix under extreme pressure inside the combustion chambers.

On the other hand, a gasoline engine burns fuel by injecting fuel mist into the combustion chambers and igniting the fuel with electrical sparks from the spark plugs.
